Nicholas of Romania Turns 34

Today Nicholas of Romania celebrates his thirty-fourth birthday!

Nicholas Michael de Roumanie Medforth-Mills was born on 1 April 1985 at Meyrin, Switzerland, as the eldest child and only son of Princess Helen of Romania (b.1950) and Dr Robin Medforth-Mills (1942-2002), who had married in 1983. Nicholas was baptised into the Romanian Orthodox faith: his godparents were his maternal grandmother, Queen Anne of Romania (née Bourbon-Parma; 1923-2016), and his maternal aunt, Princess Margarita of Romania (b.1949). Nicholas was joined by a younger sister, Karina, who was born in 1989. Princess Helen and Dr Medforth-Mills were divorced in 1991.

On 30 December 2007, King Michael of Romania announced that his grandson Nicholas would receive the title "Prince of Romania" with the style of "Royal Highness," which came into effect upon Nicholas' 25th birthday. On 1 April 2010, he became a member of the Romanian royal family.

Nicholas was civilly married on 6 October 2017 at Henley-on-Thames to Alina-Maria Binder. The couple celebrated their religious wedding on 30 September 2018 at the Saint Elijah Church in Sinaia. Their union marked the first wedding of a member of the Romanian royal family to occur in the country since the 1931 nuptials of Princess Ileana of Romania and Archduke Anton of Austria.

Today, Nicholas and Alina of Romania reside in Bucharest.

Dowager Countess of Paris attends Memorial Mass for Husband

Today Princess Micaëla d'Orléans, Dowager Countess of Paris, attended a Requiem Mass for her late husband, Prince Henri d'Orléans, Count of Paris, who died on 21 January 2019 at Paris.
The mass to remember the life of the Count of Paris took place at 11am at Saint-Germain-L'Auxerrois. Along with close friends of the count, the service was attended by one of the sisters of the late prince, Princess Hélène d'Orléans, Dowager Countess Evrard of Limburg-Stirum. Alexis Francis-Boeuf, the son of Princess Micaëla from her first marriage, was also present.
This is the first public appearance of the Dowager Countess of Paris since the passing of Prince Henri. Due to a recent hospitalisation, Princess Micaëla was unable to attend the funeral of her husband. Confined to a wheelchair, the Dowager Countess was finally able to commemorate her dearly loved spouse.

Prince Andrew and Sarah: Are the Duke and Duchess of York Together Again?

Folks, despite the opportune timing, this is not an April Fools' joke! From ITV: "Last weekend, Fergie [Sarah Ferguson] joined her former husband after he completed a number of official royal visits overseas. The couple stayed in Bahrain on a private visit but they were official guests of their host: the Bahrain Crown Prince. The Duchess of York hasn’t been on a foreign royal visit with the Duke for 25 years."

This afternoon, as is customary for him, our longtime subscriber Phil Perry took BART from San Francisco and visited Eurohistory, where he collected his copies of Issues CXVII & CXVIII.

Besides having a good chat abut the latest royal news, as well as discussing the contents of the magazine, we had an enjoyable time with Phil.

Phil Perry collecting his magazines at Eurohistory!

Among out topics of conversation were my growing interest in pre-modern European royalty, particularly: The Plantagenets, the Wittelsbachs and Habsburgs, the Trastámaras of Castilla and Aragón, the Albrets of Navarre, the Valois, the House of Orange, the Sforza of Milan, the Nassaus, there Rurikids of Russia, the Medicis of Florence, the Gonzaga of Mantua, and oh so many more. I feel most magazines have tended to ignore this vast wealth of European royal history. Hence, EUROHISTORY hast started more research into these ancient dynasties that contributed so greatly to the development and shaping of modern Europe.

Expect more articles about these unique dynasties inside our pages!
